Free Arts NYC provides underserved children with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize its full potential serving over 30,000 children and families since 1997.
As we enter our 20th year, Free Arts has made the strategic decision to focus on the expansion of our Teen Arts Program and our Free Arts Days. The Teen program allows us to meet a real need in our communities for programming that specifically supports teens with pathways and opportunities to access NYC cultural institutions and artists as well as explore the arts as an academic or professional goal. Our Free Arts Day program focuses on children from the Department of Homeless Services.
The Director of Development and Strategy will play a pivotal leadership role in strengthening Free Arts NYC’s fundraising capacity to meet our $2 million budget (2017), and in developing strategic initiatives that demonstrate impact and engage partners. This is a rewarding opportunity to work side by side with the Founder and Executive Director to chart Free Arts next phase. This position will help drive the growth of existing initiatives and also be responsible for developing and implementing new, revenue-generating business lines that expand Free Arts reach, impact, and enhance success. The position works closely with staff across the organization and has direct responsibility for supervising the Development team.
*Reports Directly to the Founder/Executive Director
*Supervises the Development team (4-5 early and mid-career staff, plus consultants)
*Works closely with the Program Director and Finance Manager
*Responsible for leading and managing the Development Team to raise 2 million dollars (2017) through individuals, grant, events and sponsorships, with expected revenue growth in future years.
*Mentor and manage staff on goal setting, time management, strategic planning.
*Lead strategic program development in all areas, actively identify and establish partnerships.
*Create storyline to tell and sell, including creating new language for grants and other communications materials.
*Develop strategic program partnerships and initiatives.
*Work closely with Program Director to understand and support their needs and the implementation of programs funded by donors and partners.
*Determine how to make the greatest impact with the least dollars spent.
*Outstanding internal organizer and strategic thinker
*Ability to strategize across departments & switch between projects & people quickly & seamlessly
*A track record of successful fund development, in either the business or nonprofit sectors
*5-10 years related experience, with progressively increasing responsibilities
*Multi-task efficiently and effectively
*Excellent written and oral communication skills
*Creative out of the box forward thinker
*Mature leader, motivator, humble, relationship builder, business savvy
*Hold people accountable w/follow through
*Ability to lead in Executive Director’s absence
*Strong established relationships within the corporate community
Hours: Full-time; occasional weekend and nights (flex time offered accordingly)
