Elephant Room is looking for enthusiastic interns interested in gaining more experience in a gallery setting where the artists are valued and the idea that art be accessible to everyone is a priority. A gallery intern is needed to work the Spring Semester of 2016. The internship starts the 2nd week of January and runs through mid-May. 10-12 hours per week are required and hours are a combination of working in the gallery dealing with artist and client inquiries, posting on our blog, handling sales of artwork, doing research and social media updates, assisting with installs, art handling, studio visits, general organization, marketing and working at gallery receptions, talks and workshops. The interns would be involved in many projects that are a part of the gallery’s programming and community partnerships, including exhibitions or pop ups at other locations.
What can you gain from an internship at Elephant Room? The experience of working one on one with a gallery director and learning the day to day routines that it takes to run an arts organization, work side by side with the represented artists as well as new artists that are exhibiting, network with these artists as well as other art professionals in the field, and gain a real understanding of what emerging and mid-career artists are doing in Chicago. In addition to all of this, the intern will gain experience with installing art exhibitions and art handling, social media presence, writing press releases, blogging, selling artwork, curating exhibitions and event planning.
Applicants must be in at least their 2nd year of college or a recent graduate looking for more experience. Candidates should be interested in art in some capacity, be organized, reliable and motivated to work in a gallery setting that promotes community building. Experience with art handling, graphic design, writing or blogging and social media is a plus. Candidates must be available at least 2 days per week from 11amto 5pm and one of these days can be a Saturday.
