P.S. ARTS is dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing arts education to underserved public schools and communities. P.S. ARTS is the only organization in Southern and Central California that provides yearlong arts education in dance, music, theater and visual arts to every child in a school during the regular school day. Without our programs, children in these underfunded school districts would not have access to the arts.
The IOCA Program is a nationally recognized, award winning, after-school theatre-based program. The curriculum adheres to the California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) and English-Language Arts Content Standards for six through eighth grades. Teaching Artist Leaders guide students through the curriculum, exposing them to multiple arts disciplines and the elements of creating a play (e.g. theatre vocabulary, thematic through-lines, character development, story & structure, conflict resolution, acting, directing, writing, blocking, vocal projection, singing and theatrical styles) ending with a culminating performance held at a professional theatre. Additional key components of the program include related-administrative duties, weekend workshops and field trips and an overnight two-and-a-half-day weekend theatre intensive camping retreat.
The Artist Leader Training Academy is a paid professional development opportunity for artists of all mediums and arts educators to: a) learn the award winning Inside Out Community Arts (IOCA) curriculum; b) gain tools and techniques for team teaching and classroom management; c) become adept in the California State VAPA Standards; d) hone skills and get practical experience in engaging youth in positive, life-affirming experiences.
Selected candidates enter the Artist Leader Training Academy as Trainees in order to complete comprehensive training in the IOCA curriculum and methodology. The Academy is an extensive three level process and Trainee progress is evaluated at each benchmark by Master Trainers and the Program Director, Extended Learning. Upon completion and positive evaluation, the successful Academy graduate will be entered into the Artist Leader Corp and become eligible for Inside Out Community Arts teaching positions as they become available throughout the year in schools and community centers throughout L.A. County.
