Shen Wei Dance Arts (SWDA) is an internationally renowned contemporary dance company under the direction of the Chinese-born, American choreographer and visual artist Shen Wei. The interdisciplinary, culture-bridging, movement-based work Shen Wei makes for his company draws on influences as varied as traditional Chinese culture and arts; European surrealism; American high modernism; and the ritual power of ancient drama. He creates dances for the stage with the compositional rigor of a visual artist (typically designing his own sets, costumes and make-up), incorporating vivid colors, striking design and imaginative use of space into theatrical, kinetic paintings. Often staging his dances on a grand scale with a high level of production detail, his works are celebrated for their “gorgeous visual imagery” (The London Times).
SWDA is currently seeking college students and graduates, interested in obtaining hands-on experience in arts administration for fall and winter internships. Our internship program offers an inside look into the day to day operations of a multi‐faceted, fast paced arts organization.
Interns will have a unique opportunity to be involved in various aspects of the organization, including our upcoming BAM season, benefit and art auction, and will be engaged in Marketing, Development, and Social Media. Interns will also assist in planning our winter intensive dance workshop and China tour.
Internships are unpaid but can be taken for academic credit. Interns should expect to work 16-20 hours per week from the SWDA office, located at 165 West 86th Street. Typically, scheduling is flexible from M‐F, 10am‐6pm. When available, free access is offered to SWDA Open Technique Classes for those with a dance background. All interns will have the opportunity to observe company in rehearsals.
Candidates should be energetic, eager to learn and have a self‐starter attitude. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet research, required. Photoshop, InDesign and Final Cut Pro experience is a plus. Candidates should have excellent professional, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
